Ingredients

  • 30ml Cognac
  • 30ml crème de cacao
  • 60ml sweet (dessert) wine
  • 22.5ml simple syrup
  • 1 egg

Instructions

  1. Add all ingredients to a shaker and dry shake.

  2. Add ice and shake until chilled.

  3. Strain into a tulip or large coupe.

  4. Garnish with cinnamon powder.

Hints

  1. Dry shaking refers to shaking without ice, before adding ice and shaking again. This technique is used when egg (or egg white) is added to a recipe in order to improve texture.

  2. As with most old cocktails, this recipe can be made several different ways. Some people replace the sweet wine with port or sherry. Pisco can sometimes take the spot of the Cognac as well.

  1. The name of the cocktail is often associated with Andrés Bello (1781-1865), an Venezuelan intellectual, later a Chilean national. According to the story, Bello loved this cocktail and often proclaimed "tráigame usted otra vaina de ésas!" (Bring me another one of those things!).

  2. Vaina is a word used in some Latin American countries (including Venezuela) to refer to "something" (anything). It has many other uses and can mean different things depending on the context.

  3. Despite its likeliness to a dessert style cocktail, the Vaina is served as an aperitif in Chile.
