The Ninth Ward

Ingredients

  • 45ml bourbon
  • 22.5ml falernum
  • 15ml elderflower liqueur
  • 22.5ml lime juice
  • 2 dashes Peychaud's bitters
No. of Servings:
1

Garnish

Lemon or orange twist, or none

Instructions

  1. Add all ingredients to a shaker with ice.

  2. Shake until chilled.

  3. Strain into a rocks glass with ice.

  4. Either leave ungarnished, or twist a lime or orange peel over the drink and garnish with the twist.

Hints

  1. This cocktail is traditionally served in a coupe. However, since it's a tad on the sweet side, it often works best when served on a rocks glass with ice, as suggested above.

  2. The original recipe used Falernum syrup, instead of Falernum liqueur. Either should work!

Trivia

  1. Created by Robert "Brother Cleve" Toomey in Boston, Massachusetts for Tales of the Cocktail, a week-long celebration of all things cocktails, held every year in New Orleans, Louisiana.

  2. The cocktail's name is a reference both to the Ward Eight, a late Nineteenth Century cocktail created in Boston, and to the Ninth Ward, one of the neighborhoods which was most affected by Hurricane Katrina in 2005.
