  • 15ml triple sec
  • 22.5ml lemon juice
  • 15ml simple syrup
No. of Servings:
1

Garnish

Sugar rim and lemon twist

Instructions

  1. Add the ingredients to a shaker with ice.

  2. Shake until chilled.

  3. Strain into a sugar-rimmed coupe.

  4. Twist a lemon peel over the drink to express the essential oils and garnish with the twist.

Hints

  1. To make the sugar rim: Take a lemon half and rub the outside of the glass. Place sugar on a flat surface, and roll the glass over it.

  2. Lemon and orange go well with berries! Add half a measure of your favorite berry liqueur (Chambord, crème de mûre or cassis, etc.) if you want to play around with this recipe.

  3. Alternatively, some people like adding half a measure of limoncello to deepen the lemon flavor.

  4. Lemon Drops are often served as shots: Equal parts vodka, triple sec and lemon juice.

Trivia

  1. Created in the 1970s by Norman Hobday, the owner of the Henry Africa's bar in San Franscisco, USA.

  2. Henry Africa's was known as a "fern bar" due to its decoration being mostly plants. This was a departure from the generally dark, sometimes seedy atmosphere of the "traditional" bar.

  3. Fern bars drew a younger clientele which included women. Consequently, these bars offered cocktails which were lighter and easier to drink, lending to a more relaxed vibe.

  4. Before the 70s, women weren't generally allowed to go to bars (or wouldn't want to go there because of the aforementioned seedy atmosphere), making the Lemon Drop directly tied to a movement which empowered women to attend previously male-dominated spaces.

  5. Sometimes known as a Lemon Drop Martini when served as a cocktail instead of as a shot.
