  • 60ml Cognac
  • 15ml Green Chartreuse
  • 22.5ml lemon juice
  • 15ml simple syrup
  • 1 dash Angostura bitters

Instructions

  1. Pour all ingredients into a shaker with ice.

  2. Shake until chilled.

  3. Strain into a coupe.

  4. Twist a lemon peel over the drink to express the oils and garnish with the twist.

Hints

  1. Just like in the Sidecar, we feel the use of fresh lemon juice is key - this cocktail doesn't quite work with lime juice, it's too acidic and it's too loud next to the other ingredients.

  2. Some bartenders prefer using yellow Chartreuse instead of green Chartreuse on this cocktail. Try which one you like best!

  1. This variation of a Sidecar appears in Hugo Ensslin’s Recipes for Mixed Drinks (1917), the oldest mention we have of it. Ensslin does not specify who created the drink, or in what year.

  2. The Avenue des Champs-Elysees is located in Paris. It connects the Arc de Triomphe with the Place de la Concorde. It is considered one of the world’s most famous commercial streets.

  3. This cocktail contains two very famous French ingredients, Cognac and Chartreuse, which most likely has something to do with the cocktail’s name.
